PREMIERE: loulou – It Spills Out
Across four earnest tracks of vulnerability and mental health, Meanjin based trio loulou create a memorable debut.
Honesty and openness in songwriting is a magical thing. I’ve never met the members of loulou, yet by the time the last note of their debut EP It Spills Out had wrung out, I felt I had. Through moments of relatability in untuned, unplayed guitars being placed out of sight and out of mind. To the general desire to get better. Or the quirkier comparisons of self-growth to plant-growth. Loulou lay bare tales that shout who they are. Genuine and genuinely brilliant from start to finish.
A lo-fi feel throughout the EP reinforces this sense of honesty. A raw recording that doesn’t try to hide anything allows highlights to truly shine. Clever guitar riffs laced with pop sensibilities carry you through songs, while the crisp harmonies of bassist Caitlin Callanan polish a platform for lead Louis Whelan to meander in a way that hooks you in for a closer listen. It is an ever interesting and intelligent mixing bowl of new wave, garage, pop and post-punk that ultimately feels warm and unique.
Ever the sweethearts, loulou are offering It Spills Out in the form of an ethical eco-friendly tee designed by artist Ashleigh Djokic (available to order now).
