PREMIERE: Emily Duncan - Silence is Safe
Graceful, considered and simply stunning, Wollongong’s Emily Duncan, today releases her debut single Silence is Safe.
Silence is Safe is a beautiful dance of influences, an astonishing voice and dangerously relatable lyrics. Twisting, unwinding and floating for just over three blissful minutes in a display of songcraft that makes it hard to believe you’re listening to a debut single.
Lazy guitars, slow stepping synths and a ukulele tease at coastal indie, whilst Duncan’s ethereal voice fill the song with a genuine warmth despite subject matter. Nothing feels out of place, yet nothing feels expected in a song that stays long after its first listen.
Easy to get swept up in like the subject of the song itself, Silence is Safe, comments on the temporary nature of the modern relationship. Asked of the meaning behind the song, Duncan, states:
“It’s about the woes of modern dating. It’s about keeping someone in your back pocket until you decide that you have the commitment required to enter a relationship… but kind of not telling them along the way that that’s what you’re doing.”
Having played and performed for most of her life as a folk artist, a year of touring as a member of Jack R Reilly’s live band has inspired a total sonic rebirth. One that I couldn’t be more excited by.
