Get Smart To Your New Favourite Band The Belair Lip Bombs
The Belair Lip Bombs are my favourite band to emerge in 2018. Debut single Get Smart is fierce, soaring and going to have you reaching for the repeat button.
Some songs just slap you in the side of the head. You’ll be having a regular arse day when suddenly something like Get Smart by The Belair Lip Bombs comes out of nowhere and rattles you into giving it all of your attention.
Vocalist Maisie Everett is dominant on the band’s debut. Her vocals roar, whisper and run riot for the majority of the four and a half minute song. Illustrating a huge range and control that varies from sliding out conversationally to ripping in and commanding you to follow. In lieu with Natalie Foster (Press Club), Sophie Hopes (Tired Lion) or Isabella Manfredi, Everett is the latest in a long line of Australian frontwomen that make you shut the shit up and listen.
The platform created for Everett to flourish on is equally as impressive. A combination of short guitar stabs and constant riffing keeps this song rolling and controlled until moments of pure breakout. A huge, effect laden guitar solo breaks down and breaks apart, cutting the song in two and providing a place for rest before slamming right back into you. It’s intelligent song construction that gives and takes when you want it to; ultimately leaving a song that largely strives on its abrasive elements, palatable and incredibly moreish.
Having formed right at the tail end of 2017 and already announced a debut EP for later in the year, I could not be more stoked to have found The Belair Lip Bombs this morning.
