PREMIERE: Pemberton – Tendencies
Soaring, unguarded and completely brilliant, Pemberton’s latest single Tendencies is about to be your new favourite song from your new favourite band. A taste of things to come from Pemberton’s debut full length album, Tendencies, is premiering exclusively on Laundry Echo today.
With only one single previously released in 2016’s Take Back, Pemberton, have established themselves as one of Adelaide’s finest acts. Having shared stages with everyone from Alex Lahey to Dune Rats, received national radio play and come up in every conversation I have ever had about how good bands from Adelaide are. Pemberton are hyped and latest single Tendencies lives up to and completely exceeds that hype.
Immediate in its intelligence, Tendencies, sounds like the forward facing modern emo of Title Fight or Joyce Manor anchored in a distinct Australian sound and use of language. Sonically you could pick apart any element of Tendencies and be impressed. Damon Lloyd’s expressive yet tight drumming is remarkable enough for a paragraph of his own right, building a pounding platform for every part of the track to flourish. Guitar stabs are perfectly placed, hooks stay with you and vocals strain in all the right places. It’s an incredibly polished song that doesn’t feel overworked.
The true highlight for me comes in the bridge and return chorus/outro. Dropping away to just keys and vocals before reaching deep and pulling out all the stops for a triumphant shift into the 5th gear. It’s one of those moments that you can’t prepare for when a song that has already seemingly given it’s all, throws down the gauntlet and shows you another level of guts.
A song that screams for reassurance in relationship, vocalist/guitarist Jared Grimm states:
‘tendencies’ is about that stage in a relationship where you’re not quite sure what the other person is thinking. You can’t quite gauge how the other person feels yet. Intrusive thoughts come in and make things harder than they need to be.”
With a debut album on the horizon, Tendencies and Pemberton couldn’t be any more exciting.
