Stop Laughing And Listen To Capes
For the last three years Capes have been Canberra's best kept secret; an incredibly tight pop punk band filling rooms and hearts with their deceptively impressive song writing and floor filling anthems. With their latest single Perception pricking up ears on the national landscape we dive into their third EP in as many years Stop Laughing And Help.
At a surface level Stop Laughing And Help is a six track romp stacked with an infectious charm that picks you up and drives you from start to finish planting a smile on your face at the end. Simply put it's a brilliant album, but there's so much more than simplicity here.
Capes don't hide their influences, opting rather to execute them excellently. Capes sound like your high school band grown up and grown good. There's a maturity to every element of the songwriting on display in Stop Laughing And Help, from semantic flourishes to a grasp on their melodies so strong that you never feel a chord out of place.
Kicking off with perpetual crowd favourite To My Friends, Capes show off everything in stall on the EP early with lyrics that stick, driving drums and a big finish. Title track Stop Laughing And Help picks the energy up exactly where it was left off, a cohesion that carries through all six tracks. The highlight of the EP comes as lead single Perception slams into gear just after the two minute mark with everything to love about this band passionately on display; a passion that carries right through until closing track New Things rings out it's last chord.
Capes have achieved something special with Stop Laughing And Help in that they never put a foot wrong. These are six songs about fucking up and finding your way that deserve to be heard.
