Phoebe Go's Debut Single 'We Don't Talk' Is Just Bloody Wonderful
Sometimes a song comes along that is so stunning it makes you revive your music blog and start writing again. Phoebe Go’s ‘We Don’t Talk’ is one of them.
“I’ve been seeing somebody about it, in my sleep” the opening lyric of Phoebe Go’s debut single paints a picture of complexity in the confrontation of oneself, immediately punched home by the follow up line “But we don’t talk, we just walk, and it’s been helping me”. It’s a thematic weight nestled in an audible nest of subtle comfort that combines in a way that is ultimately all encompassingly captivating.
Throughout a sharp 3:25, Phoebe Go grabs attention in a way that seems subdued before expanding to a layered crescendo chorus that sticks the landing between soaring and restrained. Dampened guitar tones, slack drums and Phoebe’s remarkable vocal, that dances between clarity and husk on a dime, nestle the listener through verse and pre-chorus before lifting to a driving riff and call and response dual vocal that elevates the chorus.
Lyrically the song speaks to self conflict, realisation and the difficulty in coming face to face with yourself, your beliefs, substances and keeping on. It’s a spiraling soundscape of statements of self and resilience that pushes through the hard questions and survives in a beautiful way that ultimately feels hopeful.
Phoebe Go is the latest project from Phoebe Lou, the artist’s first time stepping out solo after a prolific career in Snakadaktal and Two People. Emerging with a fully realised sound that speaks to her experience but treads forward with tenderness and authenticity.
Every time I let this song play to completion on YouTube, it auto plays a video titled ‘Songs to sing in the car ~ A playlist of songs to get you in your feels’ and truly, that might be correct way to sign off on this article. Play We Don’t Talk in your car, drive with purpose and sing it loud. It’s a brilliant debut single from a heartfelt new project that I can’t wait to hear more from.
