OK Hotel Have Probably Written the Chorus of the Year
Some songs are explosive in that they play on restraint and release in a way that punches you in the face. Some songs are explosive in the sense that they shatter your ability to focus on anything other than the song itself. Some songs are explosive in that they propel a band into your life that you hadn’t heard of a fortnight ago. Life is Crazy (Like That), the latest single from Wollongong’s OK Hotel manages to do all three at once.
Life is Crazy (Like That) celebrates the unpredictability of life. Triumphantly throwing its hands in the air and just screaming "well fuck it”. The song tackles self growth, the breakdown of friendships, setting boundaries and growing up in a way that feels absolutely euphoric.
Musically, OK Hotel manage to straddle a place somewhere between the nostalgic golden age of grunge in equal influence with contemporary pop and surf punk. Fuzzy guitars feel fresh out of the 90s, whilst a soaring high vocal feels like it is tailor made for Connor Brooker of Brisbane band Bugs to crash onto stage and harmonise with.
If the various graduating classes of 2020 need a song to capture the mood of the room yet still feel anthemic and uplifted, I’d put forward Life is Crazy (Like That) as the front runner. This is a brilliant song.
