Angelo Saxon's Flag Bearer is a Lush Soundscape of Finding Beauty in Disparity

Some artists create soundscapes so endlessly interesting that it’s hard to walk away from a song without a second, third or fourth listen. Eora/Sydney artist Angelo Saxon is one of those artists.

From it’s opening moments Flag Bearer, the latest single from Angelo Saxon, delivers a lush tapestry of sounds that draw your attention equally. Tight drums and a rounded plucked guitar pattern create the platform for which a warbling and consuming synth creates a sonic setting of tension, soon soothed by Angelo Saxon’s deep vocal delivery.

Flag Bearer’s dance between tense nervous musical delivery, calmed vocal and soaring chorus creates a masterful performance of contrast that carries its listener on a journey of chaos and calm. The constant addition of sounds being slipped in driving up the replayability as you reach to pick apart what you are actually hearing.

On top of the musicality, lyrics unfold of holding belief and optimism in the face of change and increasing disillusionment. Finding the beauty and humour within this sad disparity.

It’s bold and interesting songwriting that struck a similar chord with me to first listening to D.D Dumbo or Cate Le Bon. Yet the music of Angelo Saxon stands entirely on its own somewhere between art-pop and post-punk in a moreish genre ambiguity that just adds to the desire to consume more.
